Unless of course you are in a German BB with 12+km Secondaries like the Schlieffen or an American BB like a Georgia which can outrun many DDs. You should be relying upon CAs, DDs and CVs to deal damage to the DDs. Your HE will do considerable damage but you will likely not get more than a single salvo off before they evade and go dark. Your AP will almost always Over Pen since they have no citadel. You should not be using your main guns on DDs. I am too slow and clingy to react to any threat. Sometimes destroyers will even be hidden, taking me offguard. Making my route uncertain seems to be the best idea, but even that is far from being a guarantee, and it will mess up the cannans constantly. I mean there is a battle going on, every unwanted movement with a battleship is a pain, i should not be supposed to focus 100% of my energy on surviving a single ship. On TOP of THAT i can not hit a destroyer even with 4 cannons pointed at it, with 1 i won't achive nothing. On top of that cannons are slow to rotate, if i am costantly shifting position they will never be aimed. Some people said that i should face them forward to make myself a smaller target, but even that is not a guarantee. Once they are revealed any evasive manouver is impossible or useless. Topedoes can be seen only when they are too close, and they are not physical until they get detected, it means that they pop out of nowhere even if you were scanning the sourface for them. If a torpedo is well aimed evasive manouvers are useless. The 2nd big problem is torpedoes: how can i dodge them? They are so small that even well aimed shots miss, so whenever i see one i focus fire on it, considering it a big threat, but 95% of the shells miss.
